Blue Crocodile Covered Chain Belt
Exotic-skins virtuoso Nancy Gonzalez is upping the ante for innovation with crocodile. This week, the Colombia-based designer launched a new, limited-edition capsule collection of bags and jewelry (her first-ever foray into bijoux), featuring tough-looking chains that appear to be hardware, but are actually made of pure croc, which is then wrapped and covered with more croc skin, link by link. "Everything is completely handmade by our artisans," explains the 13-year-old label's president, Santiago Gonzalez (son of Nancy). "It's very much like an hate couture process," he adds.
The result of all that effort is exceptionally lightweight chains, fashioned as hip-slung belts and toggle bracelets. The new lineup, available exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman, also features on-trend cross-body mini bags and envelope clutches, which came in a range of fluorescent hues like acid yellow, fuchsia, and aquamarine that will look fresh on the arms (or wrists) of Gonzalez's polished customer. Santiago revealed they are toying with the idea of adding a few of the chain pieces to the main line, but given how time-consuming and costly the technique is, that might be tough. He pointed put a glossy white structure tote from the new collection on display at BG in New York and said, "For that one, we need to search our family-controlled reptile farms all over the world for albino crocodiles with just the right pigment."
